Little Things

We’ve all heard someone give the speech with the rocks in the jar, yes?

“Put the large rocks in first….then the pebbles…then the sand.”

 

It’s always a lesson in making time for the big things first…family, friends, and big goals. Then add the little things later. Whatever that means, “little things.”

 

What if that’s backward?

 

I heard two quotes this week, from radically different places:

“If we take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves” – Peloton instructor!!

“It’s the little things that drive the big things.” – Random TV show

 

What about it? Are you spending time appreciating the little things in your life? Noticing and celebrating the so-called “small victories?” Are you so focused on how you have “not” achieved your “BIG” goal – whatever that is, that you forgot to notice how many small steps you’ve taken towards it?

 

I’m 100% guilty of not appreciating the little things…sometimes. But I usually remind myself and can bring myself back to:

· Getting a blog out, even during midterm week

· Returning a few emails in between meetings

· Remembering to call the dentist back! 

 

What if we gave our brain a break to appreciate all the small things that go on every day? The things we “have” to do – take out the garbage, pay the electric bill, say thank you to the person on the phone at the dentist's office? WE don’t “have” to do any of it….we choose so we can:

· Have a clean, not smelly house

· Have lights

· Prevent cavities

 

All these little things add up to a nice place to live (with lights) and great oral hygiene. But, more importantly, they add up to us being sufficient, being our best selves, and creating a life that serves our own higher purpose. 

 

Have you been so focused on the big things that you forgot how important it is to kiss your loved ones every day? (They appreciate it) Pay the electric bill? Call the dentist? Do you appreciate you?
