Self Doubt and Moving ForwardJul 09, 2022

I recently realized that one reason I have been anxious about becoming the coach I want to be, is that I’ve been gripping onto the professor and physical therapist that I already am.
I’ve been gripping so hard to my current identity; I haven’t left space for something new to grow.
Building this business and stepping out of my comfort zone has brought up a lot of anxiety. And stress. And self-doubt.
Self-doubt is so tricky…it comes up, then it wants to protect us, “Hey, just keep doing what you’ve been doing…that’s been working just fine.”
And it’s true, it has been working, just fine. But what if I’m over fine? What if I want more than fine? That’s the rub….If I want something different I have to do something different. BUT…
BEFORE the doing, comes the being. That is the part that has been tricky for me. Before I DO something different, I must BE someone different. But that’s just not possible if I’m gripping so hard to BEING the same. Walking away from the old to get to the new seems fun at first….until the walk gets long, boring, and hot (or cold, depending on where you live). My coach compared it to a crab shedding a shell…there is a moment when the crab has no shell, no protection. NAKED. That’s how I feel sometimes. “WHERE ARE MY CLOTHES!! HURRY! QUICK! GET ME BACK TO MY OLD IDENTITY AND COMFORT ZONE!”
Here’s what I choose to believe so I can keep moving forward, shedding that shell, and building new beliefs to a new identity:
*I’ve never actually left the house naked. (although one time, when my oldest was a newborn, I almost went to work in PJ bottoms)
*I know what I’m doing. (this has become a favorite mantra)
*Change isn’t easy for anyone, so, don’t expect it to be easy for you.
*When self-doubt comes up, it means I’m doing something right. Self-doubt is a natural consequence of change.
*I can overcome self-doubt, anxiety, a desire to stay comfortable AND
*It WILL be worth it.
Walking away from the old is never easy. If it was everyone would do it. I think of it as walking towards my goals, the next version of me, my next life…shedding that old shell.
I invite you to walk towards the new, with gratitude for what was, and excitement for what is to come.
