Dorothy, You've Had the Power All Along

lessons from coaching Jul 09, 2022

In the rush to start this life coaching business, take in all the information, do what everyone was telling me to do, I forgot my WHY. I gave away my power to all the “experts” in the field of Life Coaching.

Why did I become a Life Coach?

I want to be the boss of my schedule. I want to bring value to humanity in a different way. A way not governed by outside criteria or insurance companies or other people’s rules. I got so much value out of working with a coach I said to myself “I want to do THAT.”  And let’s be honest here, I was miserable at work. SO FREAKING MISERABLE.

Dorothy ran away looking for something better, something more. She ended up right back where she started BUT with a different thought, a different perspective. Funny how that works. That’s exactly what happened to me (minus the dropping of the house thing, no witches were crushed under houses during the pursuit of my truth). I was so unhappy, so miserable. I hated work, myself, everything. I thought, if I just ran away, got a new job, new career, new everything, then I’ll be happy. I’m still at the same job. But with different thoughts, a totally different perspective, and a plan.  I get to decide my plan and when I get to change that plan.  AND, I don’t have to WAIT until this happens to be happy or excited or joyful. I get to be happy right now. Right here. I don’t have to run away to a fairy tale land with munchkins, talking scarecrows, and red shoes (albeit the shoes were fabulous). I have everything I need, right here and right now.

Running away from our roots, our true nature, all that makes us unique and special: THIS takes a LOT of energy. Looking outside for answers, validation, happiness, direction for how to be – more energy.  So much energy.

Turning inward, getting to know ourselves, and loving ALL the parts…this is my challenge right now. Loving all the parts. It’s so tempting and easy to put only the pretty parts out for display. Like at Christmas, when you put the broken or ugly ornaments in the back of the tree. But, mining all our parts for our truth, that’s hard work. And then, admitting defeat, failure, deciding to change directions…UGH, MORE WORK.  The Lion, the Tin Man, The Scarecrow, even Dorothy – already had everything they needed. They only needed to go inside, peer in, see the truth, and understand that yes, we do have everything we need. Always. No one else can “give us” what we need (even if they are a Wizard)

“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. If it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.” -Dorothy
