Choose Your Thoughts

Choose your thoughts as carefully as you choose your clothes.

 

I read this the other day and thought, “Hmmm….what a great idea.” Or is it?

 

I choose my clothes in this order:

1. COMFORT

2. Cleanliness – must have been in the closet or on the chair but NOT from the floor. 

3. How they make me feel

 

This technique works well most days, although I did have to stop wearing yoga pants every day after COVID. But hey, it motivated me to buy better pants.

But, this technique is backward for thoughts.

 

The MOST comfortable thoughts tend to be familiar, easy, usual thoughts that keep us stagnant.

 

“I’m not one of those people that makes lots of money.”

“Even though I hate it, my job is secure, so, I can’t leave.”

“I really HAVE to start (FILL IN THE BLANK – you know you say it EVERY DAY).”

 

Do you have some safe, comfortable, gray sweatpants kinda thoughts? I wonder if they are really serving you. Sure, they are comfortable. They don’t require any change in action. And there are no huge emotional swings with comfortable thoughts. Just the usual, “I feel fine.” “Everything is OK.” But what if you chose thoughts for how they FEEL first? Or, what if you chose thoughts that are UNCOMFORTABLE…at first. Just like your favorite sweats, new thoughts take time to break in. A few washings. Sometimes you fall back to the old favorites. But then…something starts to happen.

 

Thoughts create Feelings and Feelings create Actions and Actions create Results.

 

Old comfy familiar thoughts create the same old, comfy results.

 

How about a new, uncomfortable, slightly bold, not “quite” you (but could be) thought?

 

“I am killing it at work these days, I am going to pull my resume together and see what else is out there.” 

“I’m perfectly capable of making more money.”

“I’m going for a 10-minute walk today. Alone.”

“I’m TOTALLY worth it.” (whatever “it” is, YOU ARE worth it).

 

So, I agree, choose your thoughts, deliberately, carefully, and intentionally. But maybe NOT the SAME way you choose your clothes. New thoughts require more effort, like getting dressed for your best friend’s wedding. These thoughts are slightly uncomfortable, like those great pumps you bought for said wedding. And eventually, the thoughts (and the pumps) will become natural and comfortable and help you create the results you really want, not just the results that are comfortable and familiar.
